God might have a wider fan base if He did not let bad things happen to people.
But then again, wider is not always strong. A strong foundation must have some depth to it also. Depth of understanding, commitment and love are acquired through a faith that overcomes trials and temptations. Easy Believism is related to cheap grace, and cheap grace never saved anyone.
Trying, wanting, claiming to be Christian without being constantly, continuously and miraculously transformed and empowered by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the reason people profess, but do not possess salvation. It is the reason people start with Christ, but then turn back.

They think that since they started in the right direction, they are still headed in the right direction, even though they have abandoned the faith course. The way back to a life of faith is through humility, confession, reconciliation and obedience.
