(metaphor from sports).
When it is controlled, a competitive attitude can be a good thing in sports. When uncontrolled it ruins, or at least taints, an athletic career, a season, a game or a moment, which can ruin a lifetime.
This is true when the competitive spirit is manifested in the other arenas of life.
HOWEVER, treating a personal relationship as an opponent to be defeated is a destroyer.
When we approach a friend or loved one, intending to "out do them," we are really "undoing" our relationship with them.
Relationship is not a competitive confrontation, it is an encouraging encounter.
