08/04/12 THE CHARACTER, COST AND CROWN OF THE FAITHFUL

08/04/12 THE CHARACTER, COST AND CROWN OF THE FAITHFUL

While support from other Christians helps us stand firm for Christ, some believers have had to stand alone for God. Consider
The Character,
The Cost and
The Crown
of these Bible men of faith, who sometimes stood alone: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Job, Joseph, Moses, Samuel, (O.T.) Prophets, John the Baptizer, Jesus, Paul, and John the Beloved.

God designed the local church in the N. T. as a support system, to help Christians stand firm. Sadly, few are faithful, even when encouraged by others, and even fewer are faithful when they find themselves alone.

Ephesians 6:10-18
(10) Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
(11) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
(12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
(13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
(14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
(15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
(16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
(17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
(18) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

I realize that Jesus is God, but when He stood firm, He stood as a man. When He resisted temptation, it was as a man.

Jesus is the perfect example of remaining faithful.
He did not resist temptation as God, since God cannot be tempted with evil.
Rather, He resisted temptation as our Redeemer and Example.
He resisted through the power of the word of God, just as we can and must resist.
It was not the Deity of Christ that resisted temptation, it was His humanity, empowered by the Holy Spirit and armed with the Scriptures.

Hebrews 2:16-18
(16) For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
(17) Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
(18) For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Hebrews 4:14-16
(14) Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
(15) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
(16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 5:8-9
(8) Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
(9) And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

1 Peter 2:20-24
(20) For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
(21) For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
(22) Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
(23) Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
(24) Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
