Jeremiah 6:16-19
(16) Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
(17) Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
(18) Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.
(19) Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
DLG notes...
vs. 16... God tells the travelers to ask directions concerning the OLD PATHS, which is the GOOD WAY. The modern, new, emerging paths are the wrong way, the way to hell. There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end of that way is death. Remember, Jesus is THE WAY. It is not a modern Jesus, or a newly defined Jesus, but the Jesus of the Bible that is the way.
Once a person finds the Old Paths, he must walk in them. Unhappily, too many today are rejecting the Old Paths and following a new way. They not only reject the Old Paths, they mock them, condemn them as the ways of dead religion, works of the flesh and self righteousness. People find it easier to stand along or beside the way than to walk in the way. Our walk vindicates our talk.
The watchmen, the shepherds offer the flock food, shelter, guidance, protection, but the travelers say, "We will not walk therein."
vs. 17... God has set watchmen, sounding the alarm, warning the travelers and saying, "...Hearken to the sound of the trumpet.. the message of God.
The New Testament echoes the same counsel.
Hebrews 13:7
(7) Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Hebrews 13:17
(17) Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

But the people do not listen to the God appointed, God anointed pastors who watch over the souls of the people and sacrifice everything for the well being of God's flock. Instead of honoring the seasoned shepherds of the cross, they dishonor them with false accusations and carnal judgments.
The watchman stands a faithful watch, the trumpet sounds the dire warning, and the people again say, "We will not hearken."
vss 18-19... God warns the nations that if they reject Him, reject His word, reject His way, He will send them great calamity. In fact, He will give them the supposed deliverance they have imagined, envisioned. The problem is, their way of escape is the way to perdition.

If people in a church do not repent of the things that
TIE them up and
DRY them up, those things
will eventually FRY them up.
Don't SHY from spiritual wisdom
But CRY for godly counsel
And FLY to pastoral leadership.
The devil
VIES and
LIES, then
PRIES folks away from the "old paths."
He who is deceived
PLIES a course to hell and
DIES forever more.
