Unless you have been a social failure (a drunk, a drug addict or an outlaw), other social failures are not interested in what you have to say. This means Jesus does not have anything to offer them either. HOWEVER, if Christ has saved you from a life of sin, people reject you and accuse you of being self righteous.
The devil wants to prejudice people against the message of salvation by making the Christian witness unacceptable, either because the Christian is considered to be too good or self righteous.
The Christian who is speaking the truth in love is the very one I am referring to as being falsely accused of self-righteousness. As long as the ungodly are convinced that there is no such thing as experiential righteousness (obtained by faith), they are not going to sense their own need for salvation from sin. They will be attracted to cheap grace that offers forgiveness without cleansing and heaven without holiness, but they will avoid truth and will persecute those who are living godly lives. Jesus is the supreme example of this.
